Bafela Oat Muthia – Steamed Oat Dumplings

Delicious, healthy, nutritious, steamed and tempered dumplings from Gujarati Cuisine – Vegetable Muthia, can be prepared with variety of veggies and flours. I usually use cabbage, spring onion, Dudhi(bottle gourd) and in fact some greens like Fenugreek leaves (Methi), spinach, kale, Dill can be used as well.

Ingredients

  • Oats 2/3 Cup (10.67 tbs)
  • Semolina 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
  • Gram flour 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) (chickpea flour)
  • Wheat flour 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
  • Oil 4 Tablespoon
  • Spring onion 2 Cup (32 tbs), chopped finely
  • Ginger To Taste , minced
  • Garlic To Taste , minced
  • Green chillies To Taste , minced
  • Sesame seeds 1 Tablespoon
  • Yogurt 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
  • Baking soda 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Coriander powder 1/4 Tablespoon
  • Cumin powder 1/4 Tablespoon
  • Salt To Taste
  • Sugar To Taste

FOR THE TEMPERING

  • Oil 4 Tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds 1 Tablespoon
  • Sesame seed 1 Teaspoon (to taste)

Instructions

  • MAKING
  • 1.In a large bowl add all the ingredients except oil and baking soda. Mix well. Set aside.
  • 2.Prepare the steamer by filling water at the bottom and placing the steam basket.
  • 3.To the bowl with the ingredients mixture add the baking powder and sprinkle water little by little and mix well till it forms a soft dough. Wet the hands with water and take small portions of the mixture and place it in the steam basket.
  • 4.Steam it for around 20 minutes. Remove from the steamer and let it sit till it can be handles. Slice it into large pieces.
  • 5.In a frying pan, heat oil. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter, followed by sesame seeds. Cover and let them splutter. Add a pinch of asafoetida and sauté for 2 seconds. Add the sliced steamed muthia and sauté for a few minutes or till it absorbs the tempering and is covered by the sesame seeds.

SERVING

  • 6.In a serving plate, serve the muthia as snacks.

    bhavna, please check your recipe. 8 tablespoons / 1/2 cup …of baking soda ??????? are you sure ……
    You are saying 1/2 tsp but your website says above….
